I am writing to you to discuss the asylum seekers in Turkey who have been waiting in pain and suffering for an answer from the UNHCR Ankara. Their physical conditions from when they were tortured in prison, have caused severe physical illnesses that are not getting better in the conditions that they are in now. They fear being sent back to where they came from with a target on their heads. We are petitioning to have the files of these desperate people processed immediately so that they can be moved away from danger as soon as possible. The following is a letter from one of the asylum seekers currently waiting for a response from Ankara.
"I want to bring to your attention my physical and emotional suffering, requesting your assistance. I was a political activist for the freedom of the Iranians. Over the past 11 years, I have protested against the government and campaigned for women’s rights working with the Liberal Democracy of Iran group. In that time, I have been in and out of prison, sometimes for over a year term. The fear of not surviving the next term forced me to take exile in Turkey under political asylum, however I am still active in the human rights organization. On 16 Dec 2011, I got the support of the UN to visit Ankara to fulfill my last interview on Aug 19, 2012. That was the last contact, since I found that my file was being reviewed, from the UN. I am still waiting, suffering from the mental and physical abuse and torture that I received in Evin Prison. Now, I humbly ask for your signature on this petition to the UN for a positive response to my pleas." ~Meisam Roodaki
Attached are 3 files with a total of 107 signatures so far for your consideration. These can also been seen on the following website:
We look forward to seeing these young asylum seekers processed and far away from what threatens their lives, so that they may begin new and promising chapters in their lives.
Sincerely,
